Loving the Little Years - Book Review

One of the best things about having a new baby is that all the long, frequent nursing times give me a perfect opportunity to read. This past week I have been devouring books. I have been extremely encouraged by some of the books I've been reading, so I'd love to share my thoughts about them with you over my next few posts.

First up is "Loving the Little Years: Motherhood in the Trenches" by Rachel Jankovic.

Author Rachel Jankovic is a Christian housewife and mother of 5 children ages 5 and under. She thoroughly knows the daily challenges of mothering a brood of all young children. The season of parenting when there are no "big kids" to help out is a rough one! I am there too, with my 4 kids ranging in age from 2 month to 5 years old.

The subtitle, "Motherhood in the Trenches," is an apt description of life with little ones. Most days feel like an all out war! A war against sin in our children. A war with ourselves to maintain a godly attitude when we just want to scream or give up. Its a battle to press on through sleepless nights and the exhausted days that follow. Not to mention our houses look like war zones most of the time with toys, crumbs and laundry strewn across every room. Most often it feels like we're not on the winning side. Is it any wonder that we mom's could use some encouragement?!

Ms. Jankovic does a wonderful job of encouraging us right where we are as she shares keen insights and practical advice through vivid and often comical illustrations of her own life. She reminds us that this is a time of sanctification and spiritual growth for mothers and exhorts us to realize that "Christian childrearing is a pastoral pursuit, not an organizational challenge."

"Loving the Little Years" was an entertaining read that left me feeling refreshed and with a renewed excitement for mothering my own little ones. I highly recommend this short (only 102 pages), easy to read yet powerful book!
